My December Author Update 2021
So somehow we have made it to December already. Considering I feel like barely anything has happened this year it seems to have gone by extremely quickly.
Preparations & Celebrations
December has been busy for me both at home and at work. Work sees no signs of slowing down - which of course is a good thing - but it does mean my energy is zapped pretty much by the time I get home. What with Christmas preparations and celebrations I haven’t had any time to write, which I guess is to be as expected at this time of year. I have had time for Christmas nights out with the girls, a couple of cocktails with my BFF, a birthday day out with the hubster (his birthday, not mine), shopping at the Exeter Christmas market and a visit to the Christmas lights spectacular at Killerton House (National Trust), so it has been a fun month. I even got to visit my parents ‘Up North’ for a couple of days so that was a Boris Bonus.
The glitzy book launch was somewhat dumbed down due to many people dropping out, understandably cautious of catching Covid and not wanting to risk Christmas with their loved ones. The party was still fabulously full of cocktails and sparkles, and I did manage to sell 3 books, so I’m pleased with that.
Reviews & Appreciation for Getting Away
Speaking of which, book sales of Getting Away are going well on Amazon, I’m guessing these are mainly from family and friends as I haven’t done any paid advertising, but sales are sales and I even have a few 5-star reviews. On the whole, the feedback and support I've received have been above and beyond what I expected. I have been genuinely touched by the comments and messages I’ve received from people who have read my book, people who went out of their way to let me know how much they enjoyed it - I haven’t asked anyone directly what they thought, way too scary! - I have waited for them to come to me. I’m so glad I chose to put it out there, it’s given me the confidence to keep going, to send it out to the wider world and get on with book 2!
Sometimes putting yourself out there in front of people you know is harder than in front of strangers. A book, particularly a debut novel, is a very personal thing, it has a part of me on every single page. While I’m not expecting everyone (or anyone), to love it, there is definitely a peeping-through-the-fingers moment when anyone mentions it. The thrill comes when someone unexpectedly tells me they bought it and loved it, or calls me over in a cafe to let me know how much they are enjoying it (thank you, Carole!). Several people have bought it as Christmas presents for their family and friends, and I love that they have faith in me, I look forward to hearing what people who don’t know me well think.
Anyhoo, I’ve gone a bit off track there but this month has been a good one for me, yes I launched at the end of November, but December has seen good sales and I hope to expand on this in the new year.
December - done!
Coming soon - my reflections of 2021 and new writing goals for 2022! I'll see you there!
